Coronavirus Ireland: Dublin's Covid-19 'red zones' as stats show hardest-hit towns, regions, villages after cases surge

A number of towns, regions and villages in Dublin have seen significant jumps in coronavirus infections, new figures by the Department of Health has shown.

The stats outline the rate of new infections by each Local Electoral Area (LEA) in the capital where the R number has dropped to just 1 compared to elsewhere in Ireland where it stands between 1.4 and 1.8.

One of the key measures used by health officials to identify so called 'red zones' is the incidence rate.

This is the confirmed cases per 100,000 population over the last two weeks.

And by this metric, the worst-hit area in Dublin is Ballyfermot-Drimnagh, with a staggering rate of 310.4 in the last fortnight.

That is the only area in Dublin with a rate over 300 with Ballymun-Finglas and Ongar in the high 200s also.

Other big hotspots are in west Dublin as Blanchardstown, Lucan and Clondalkin all recording mid 200s too.

The North Inner City has been hit hard also with Swords rounding up the top ten despite its rate being under 200.

Here is the top ten list of the hardest-hit Local Electoral Areas in Dublin up to October 12:

Ongar - 256.7

Kimmage-Rathmines - 248.8

Clondalkin - 242.9

Lucan - 230.4

Blanchardstown-mulhuddart - 226.6

North Inner City - 213.8

Tallaght South - 203

Swords - 196.6
