Coronavirus Ireland: Dublin hurler and fireman Mick Carton recalls 'scary moments' during COVID-19 battle

Mick Carton has revealed there were "some scary moments" during his battle against coronavirus.

The former Dublin hurler spent 11 days in hospital after testing positive for Covid-19.

Speaking RTÉ Radio 1's Sunday Sport, he said: "It was a tough week. They sent an ambulance straight away. The first six days in hospital were really tough.

"There were some scary moments. I was really sick in hospital and they did a chest x-ray and the results were quite vicious.

"I was surprised because I wasn't having any shortness of breath. To see that x-ray when I wasn't showing any symptoms was scary.

"They had me on oxygen for four days solid and struggled to get my oxygen levels up.

"I'm young, fit and I definitely struggled to shake it."

Carton praised the staff who looked after him at the Mater Hospital in Dublin.

He added: "I can't thank the staff enough. They were putting their lives at risk looking after us all. The ward I was on was just for coronavirus.

"The support from family, friends and neighbours was incredible. The sense of community and how positive everyone was around us, I'll never forget it.

"It was overwhelming for everyone."
