Coronavirus Ireland: Dublin facing tighter restrictions and pub opening in jeopardy as cases continue to surge

Dublin is facing a fresh wave of restrictions as cases of coronavirus continue to surge in the city.

A further 196 cases of the virus were announced this evening with 107 in the capital.

A worrying number of these new cases are associated with community transmission while an alarming amount are over 65.

Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ronan Glynn, said: "Today we have at least 37 cases linked with community transmission. 27 of today’s cases are over the age of 65 years.

"By limiting our contacts, we limit the opportunity COVID-19 has to spread through the community and ultimately we protect our families, our communities and those who are most vulnerable to the severest impacts of the disease.”

The National Public Health Emergency Team met earlier today and RTE reports that it has recommended that restrictions be put on the number of social visits to people's homes in Dublin.

It is likely six visitors from two other households, a reduction in the currently recommended three, will be allowed.

Tighter restrictions will be put in place in residential care facilities to protect vulnerable people.

The opening of all pubs in the city on September 21 looks to be under threat too as it is likely to be contingent on the spread of the virus at that point.

Any new measures are likely to be put in place for three weeks but must first be approved by Government.

A Cabinet Sub-Committee is expected to meet to discuss NPHET's recommendations later this evening.
