Coronavirus Ireland: Dublin city shutdown as cars set to be banned from College Green and restricted elsewhere

Dublin's College Green is set to be pedestrianised and cars will be restricted in the city centre as the capital begins to reopen after the Covid-19 lockdown.

And some measures could see cars banned from areas of the city centre after 11am to create more space for pedestrians and businesses to successfully implement social distancing in queues and waiting areas.

A report by Dublin City Council said that "the same level of vehicular traffic cannot be accommodated in the city as before” according to the Irish Times.

The restricted mobility plan would be phased in over the next three to six months as the country progresses along the lockdown lifting roadmap.

A number of measures would need to be in place for the next 18 months, the report states, with some changes becoming permanent.

Dublin City Council have already successfully widened footpaths and added cycle tracks to help pedestrians get around the city during the pandemic.
