Coronavirus Ireland: Dublin accounts for 65% of new COVID-19 cases recorded in last week

Dublin remains the county hardest hit by coronavirus with a staggering 65% of new infections recorded in the capital.

The county recorded 91 of the 139 new cases reported in Ireland over the last seven days.

A staggering 84% of all new COVID-19 cases have come from Leinster with the 12 counties that make up the province accounting for 117 of the 139 further cases reported.

The capital accounts for 80 more infections that the next hardest-hit county.

Cork reported 11 new cases, Kildare nine and Meath four, according to the latest figures released by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, which cover the period up to midnight on Tuesday, July 21.

It comes after last night it was revealed that coronavirus has claimed nine more lives in the Republic of Ireland.

While seven new confirmed cases were announced by the Department of Health.

The death toll in the Republic now stands at 1,763, while the total number of infections has risen to 25,826.

It's understood that eight of these new deaths actually occurred in April, May and June - meaning the figure of nine represents one recent fatality.

Dr Ronan Glynn, Acting Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said: “Two weeks ago, we expressed our concerns about worrying trends in the progression of Covid-19 in Ireland.

"Collectively, people in Ireland responded to this call for action and together have broken chains of transmission.

"This is a further demonstration of the power of people working together and rising to the continued challenge of this unprecedented pandemic. What we need now is to hold firm and keep up the good work.

“I believe we can maintain the important progress we have made together, but only if we continue to heed the public health advice -  physical distance of 2m between one another, frequent hand washing, wearing a face covering where appropriate and cough/sneeze hygiene.”
