Coronavirus Ireland: Dr Tony Holohan points to graph to show that Ireland is 'at an early stage' of infection

This is where Ireland is now as the coronavirus pandemic rages on.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health, pointed to a graph tonight during a Covid-19 briefing showing the difference between an uncontrolled coronavirus epidemic peak and one that is controlled.

The dotted line shows our hospitals' capacity to deal with the cases.

The lower peak shows what happens if Ireland controls the spread - fewer cases, more spread out. The higher peak is what happens if we don't - far more cases, far more quickly.

The gesture shows the importance of social distancing measures and scenes seen at the weekend around the country of people mingling together in the sunshine have led officials to again review Ireland's response to the outbreak.

The National Public Health Emergency Team will meet again tomorrow morning to decide on any further measures necessary to flatten the curve of the coronavirus spread.

A reporter asked at the briefing tonight: "You have that now famous curve behind you - whereabouts on that graph are we now?

"Because obviously people are wondering to see whereabouts in this process we are  - are we 20% into it, 30%, or is it impossible to say?"

Mr Holohan replied: "Am I allowed to stand for a second and point?"

He points to the very beginning of the climb and adds: "We're somewhere over here."

Sitting down, he continues: "We're at an early stage in relation to this infection.

"The number of cases each day is small - relatively speaking, relative to what we might experience as it progresses."

He said officials were looking at modelling data to pinpoint when a 'surge' in cases may occur.

Dr Holohan added while assessments were being given in other countries, those estimates were "fraught with assumptions".

He said: "One of the implications if you look at the curve is that the measures that we have in place have the effect, or further measures that we might recommend have the effect of flattening the wave and stretching it.

"By definition, the measures last for longer."

219 new cases in the Republic were announced tonight, as well as two more deaths.

The total number of Covid-19 cases here is now 1,125.
