Coronavirus Ireland: Darren O'Dea used to self-isolating from time in Ukraine during crisis

Darren O'Dea has not struggled with self-isolation, because the well travelled defender has had plenty of practice.

The 33-year-old retired last year after a career that took him from Glasgow to Reading, Ipswich, Leeds, Blackpool, Dundee, Toronto, Mumbai and Donetsk.

It was his time in Ukraine that came to mind last week when he and his family were put on lockdown in Glasgow, with the Dubliner thankful he was not isolated in the Eastern European country.

“It crossed my mind,” he laughed, “When I was in Ukraine first I spent 6-8 weeks living in a hotel. I’d go to training, then back to the hotel room and that was it – if anyone can self-isolate, I’m the man.

“While I was in Ukraine that was the worst, a civil war kicked off and we were only allowed to come to training and that was it. So I was locked in the hotel room with no TV.

“I had a laptop but I didn’t even have Netflix so I was just downloading music and that was it.

“I’m non-stop energy when I go in somewhere new, but when I need to shut down, I can do it.”
