Coronavirus Ireland county-by-county cases: Unexpected jump in Clare as nearly half of counties see rise

Nearly half of all counties in Ireland saw a rise in coronavirus numbers over the last 24 hours, new figures show.

Once again Dublin was hardest hit, reporting 14 further infections.

Unexpectedly, Clare saw the second-biggest rise as it reported eight new cases.

The south-west county has only reported 380 cases in total since the pandemic began, but reported more new infections today than many much larger counties.

Cavan, Donegal, Galway, Kildare, Laois, Leitrim, Louth, Meath, Sligo and Westmeath were the other areas to report an increase.

The data was released this evening in the latest update from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, and covers the period up to midnight on Monday, July 27.

It comes after it was confirmed tonight that no more people have died from coronavirus in Ireland, while 14 new cases were announced.

It brings the total number of Covid-19 cases here to 25,942 since the outbreak began.

The announcement was made by the Department of Health this evening.

Dr Ronan Glynn, Acting Chief Medical Officer, said: “11 of today’s cases were close contacts of confirmed cases and half of these had no symptoms.

"If you are concerned that you have been in contact with a confirmed case please come forward for testing. Do not wait for symptoms to emerge.

“There are now 8 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our hospital system, the lowest number since early March.

"However, across Europe the pandemic appears to be accelerating once again. We have an opportunity to avoid a similar scenario here.

"We must take it by focusing once again on keeping our distance, washing our hands, wearing face coverings and continuing to make safe decisions that will protect ourselves, our friends, our families. No one is safe unless everyone is safe.”
