Coronavirus Ireland: Conor McGregor welcomes 'more substantial lockdown' in battle against Covid-19

Conor McGregor has welcomed Ireland going into full lockdown in the battle against coronavirus.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced on Friday that all non-essential trips are banned for two weeks, with the only exceptions for travelling to essential work, to shop for food or household goods, for healthcare appointments, and for vital family reasons.

Welcoming the announcement, McGregor said: "We have now entered a more substantial lockdown and I am pleased to see it."

He added: "To the Irish public, we must abide by the legislations put forth tonight by our leaders. No further than two kilometres from home, no unessential travel and full closure of non-essential business.

"Now more than ever we must abide by this and I pray for the health and safety of our country that we do. The fate of our lives and the lives of our loved ones depends on it."

The UFC star once again called on Irish airports to be closed to the public, with only flights carrying medical equipment or healthcare staff allowed to operate.

He also asked Irish people currently abroad to stay where they are.

McGregor revealed on Wednesday that he was donating €1million to buy protective equipment to be used in hospitals.

In a reply to a Twitter message from Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe, the Dubliner said: : “I have used my platforms multiple times since this has began.

“I went further and made the video. Today I am purchasing myself, €1 million euro worth of personal protective equipment to be deployed to all the fighting hospitals in the Leinster region.

“Our most affected region, to this date. St. James, Mater, Tallaght. Beaumont. Vincent’s. Where would we be without these brave men and women, I do not know.”
