Coronavirus Ireland: Man in early 30s dies of COVID-19 as child battling virus admitted to ICU

A child who is battling covid-19 has been admitted to the intensive care unit in an Irish hospital.

The youngster, who is between the age of five and 14, is the only patient under the age of 24 to have been placed in the ICU, statistics reveal.

In addition, another person between the ages of 25 and 34 has sadly died from Covid-19.

The man, who died in a Dublin hospital earlier this week, is second patient in that age bracket to lose their life to the killer bug.

However it is those over the age of 65 that remain the hardest hit by coronavirus, accounting for a staggering 46% of all hospitalised cases.

The figures compiled by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre are valid up to midnight on March 31.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan revealed on Thursday night that a total of 148 coronavirus patients have been admitted to Intensive Care Units across Ireland during the outbreak.

Of those admitted to ICU, 14 have tragically passed away.

25 people have recovered from the virus and were discharged.

These figures are correct as of 1pm on Thursday April 2.
