Coronavirus Ireland cases today: Update as 2,608 infections announced and 51 deaths confirmed

A further 2,608 coronavirus cases have been confirmed this evening.

Sadly another 51 Covid-19 related deaths have been announced.

The figures were confirmed by The National Public Health Emergency Team this evening.

They come as Dr Tony Holohan warned that Ireland could see as many as 1,000 Covid-19 related deaths in the month of January alone.

In a stark letter to Health Minister Stephen Donnelly last week the Chief Medical Officer warned that the high level of mortality is likely to continue throughout the month.

The letter added that models also suggest that deaths in the community will reach a peak of at least 25-30 deaths per day, and warned that these "levels will persist at least for the rest of January."

"Given the large number of recently notified outbreaks in long term residential care facilities and hospitals, we can, unfortunately, expect to see, in addition, a large scale of mortality in these settings", he wrote.

"It is therefore anticipated that a total of at least 500-1,000 deaths may occur in the month of January."

Meanwhile Health Minister Stephen has pledged to have the whole country vaccinated by the end of the summer.

The Minister for Health set the ambitious target of all jabs being complete by September during a Q&A on the vaccination programme in the Dáil.

Mr Donnelly said: “We are planning our programme based on a supply of vaccines that would mean every citizen can be vaccinated by September.”

He added: “Vaccines are on the way and we as a nation are on our way.”
