Coronavirus Ireland cases today: Further 499 infections announced and eight deaths confirmed

Ireland has recorded 499 new cases of Covid-19.

Tragically, eight more people have lost their lives after fighting the deadly virus.

The figures were announced by the National Public Health Emergency Team this evening.

Ireland continues to show positive signs that the country is heading in the right direction in curbing the spread of coronavirus.

However it is unlikely that any changes to the restrictions will be made until the end of November.

Hospital and ICU admissions as well as deaths have plummeted in the second Covid wave, new statistics have shown.

The figures from the Central Statistics Office illustrate that the average hospitalisation rate in August, September and In October was less than 50 people per 1,000 confirmed cases, down from a peak of 192 per 1,000 in March.

In October there were just 32 people hospitalised for every 1,000 cases.

ICU admissions dropped from 27 per 1,000 cases in March to 3 in October while deaths went from 74 to 3 per 1,000 cases.

The worst week for admissions to hospitals was the week ending 27 March when 688 of the 3,428 cases were admitted to hospital, a further 95 of these were admitted to ICU.

In comparison, of the 3,881 confirmed cases in the week ending 30 October, 126 have been admitted to hospital and less than five people have been admitted to ICU.

Meanwhile Health Minister Stephen Donnelly previously indication that parts of the country could emerge from lockdown into Level 2 restrictions sparking much hope for the Christmas period.

Under Level 2 pubs and restaurants would be permitted to welcome customers once again while retailers across the country could open their doors once again meaning people could do their Christmas shopping at ease.
