Coronavirus Ireland cases today: Another spike as 1,754 cases confirmed with 11 deaths announced

A further 1,754 coronavirus cases have been confirmed this evening.

Meanwhile tragically another 11 deaths have been announced.

The figures were announced by the National Public Health Emergency Team this evening.

Fears continue to grow among health experts that the Covid-19 situation is continuing to spiral out of control.

Yesterday Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan expressed concerns about Ireland's track and trace system which has become increasingly overwhelmed in recent weeks.

And the top doctor dropped the bombshell that people who are identified as close contacts of confirmed Covid cases are no longer being advised to get tested for coronavirus.

They will instead be asked to self isolate for 14 days.

Meanwhile HSE chief Paul Reid warned the "real picture" of Ireland's daily Covid-19 figures is likely as high as 3,000 cases per day.

Paul Reid said today that the virus is now "absolutely rampant" in communities across the country, in a chilling reprimand to a country firmly in the teeth of a third wave.

And he urged the public to "retract back to our homes, reduce the contacts drastically, and really protect ourselves in the coming days and weeks.

"The virus is absolutely rampant, now, in the community. We know that for a fact. Everybody is at extreme high risk now of contracting the virus."
