Coronavirus Ireland cases today: 3,086 further infections announced with 46 deaths confirmed

A further 3,086 coronavirus cases have been announced this evening.

Meanwhile sadly another 46 Covid-19 related deaths have been confirmed in a massive jump this evening.

2 of these deaths occurred in December 2020, and the remaining 44 occurred in January 2021.

The figures were announced by the National Public Health Emergency Team this evening.

They come as Ireland is seeing encouraging signs that we are beginning to turn a corner in term of bringing infection down.

However health experts continue to warn of pressure mounting on the hospital system.

Ireland now has more people being treated in ICU for Covid-19 that ever before new figures show.

The country hit the grim milestone on Tuesday as experts continue to warn about the mounting pressure on the Irish hospital system.

Latest data shows that 158 patients are now in intensive care higher than the previous peak of the pandemic which saw 155 in ICU.

Meanwhile there are now 1,700 people in Irish hospitals with Covid-19.

HSE Chief Executive Paul Reid urged people to stay at home on Tuesday as said the country needs to get hospitals and nursing homes back to safer levels of admissions.

Mr Reid wrote on Twitter: "Nobody wants more people sick with #COVID19. 1,700 patients now in hospital & 143 in ICU would swap with any of us.

"The big ask of everyone is to stay at home & help get our hospitals & nursing homes back to safer levels. Our healthcare teams ask just this of us."

Thirteen hospitals are now listed as having no intensive care beds free.

There are 30 ICU beds available in the system for adult patients, according to overnight figures from the Health Service Executive.

Cork University Hospital is caring for 140 Covid-19 patients, the highest number in the country.
