Coronavirus Ireland cases today: 248 new infections and 5 deaths announced

A further 248 coronavirus cases have been announced this evening.

Meanwhile sadly another 5 people have died due to Covid-19.

The figures were announced by the National Public Health Emergency Team this afternoon.

There are now a total of 34,560 coronavirus cases in Ireland while the death toll here sits at 1,802.

Dublin and Donegal have been placed under strict lockdown rules following an alarming rise in cases in recent weeks.

Gardai have ramped up Covid-19 checkpoints in both countries in an effort to get members to adhere to public health guidelines.

However it's likely other counties will be moved to level 3 lockdown as cases across the country continue to rise.

Of the cases notified today;

  • 132 are men / 115 are women
  • 67% are under 45 years of age
  • 36% are confirmed to be associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case 
  • 36 cases have been identified as community transmission 
  • 104 in Dublin, 37 in Donegal, 36 in Cork, 8 in Kildare, 8 in Westmeath, 6 in Kilkenny, 6 in Laois, 6 in Offaly, 5 in Longford, 5 in Monaghan, 5 in Wexford, and the remaining 22 cases are in 11 other counties.

The HSE is working to identify any contacts the patients may have had to provide them with information and advice to prevent further spread.

Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn earlier indicated that Louth, Kildare, Wicklow, Cork and Galway are areas which could see more measures introduced.

And he urged people in these counties to follow Limerick and Tipperary's example, two areas were cases have significantly reduced recently.
