Coronavirus Ireland: Boxing chiefs considering waiving all affiliation fees for clubs

Irish boxing chiefs are considering waiving all affiliation fees for clubs amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association have a teleconference arranged for next weekend where the affiliation fees Ireland’s clubs pay to the IABA will be discussed, according to president Dom O’Rourke.

Michael O’Brien, President of the Cork Boxing Board, revealed yesterday that he had spoken with O’Rourke regarding the fees and suggested that these be waived for this season.

O’Rourke indicated on Sunday that he is receptive to that idea.

“The important thing is safety and abiding by the health and safety guidelines and directives in relation to the coronavirus,” he said.

“The Board has further directed that there will be no championships or competition allowed to take place at club, county, provincial or national level until at least June 2020.This timeline may too be extended.”

There are approximately 360 boxing clubs on the island of Ireland. Dublin and Antrim have the highest concentration of clubs.
