Coronavirus Ireland: An extra 10,000 people to get Covid jab weekly as Moderna vaccine deemed 'safe and effective'

An extra 10,000 people in Ireland will get the Covid jab weekly as the Moderna vaccine has been approved for use.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar made the announcement today as the vaccine was declared safe and effective by the EU Medicines Agency.

He said on Twitter: "Good news. Once delivered, it should allow us to increase the number of people we vaccinate by an extra c.10k per week."

He was sharing a tweet by Urula von der Leyen announcing the approval.

The President of the EU Commission said: "Good news for our efforts to bring more #COVID19 vaccines to Europeans!

"@EMA_News assessed that the @moderna_tx vaccine is safe & effective.

" Now we are working at full speed to approve it & make it available in the EU."

It's the second vaccine to get a green light from the European medicines regulator after the Pfizer/BioNtech jab was approved in December.
