Coronavirus Ireland: Amazing graphics tell stark story of COVID-19 over last 12 months

Ireland has marked its first anniversary in the battle against the coronavirus pandemic that has been gripping the world throughout 2020 and 2021.

On 27 February 2020, the first case of COVID-19 in Ireland was announced and the country has never been the same since.

Today, we are in Level 5 restrictions, effectively putting the country into lockdown while the last 12 months have seen 218,980 cases of the disease along with 4,313 related deaths.

An amazing set of graphics highlighting all of Ireland's journey north and south has been created by Brian of Irish site IllustrateThis.

It's particularly striking during the month of January 2021, the bleakest so far in the battle against COVID-19, when the Irish pandemic hit its worst point.

The country is completely covered in red to highlight the thousands of cases that gripped the population - and saw more infections than all of 2020 combined.

He said: "The first reported case of COVID-19 in Ireland was announced exactly one year ago today. Since then there have been 331,337 cases reported in the island. Here’s what the last 12 months look like – watch out for how quickly things change in January."

Further graphics show Ireland's "quietest" months for infection and a heat map that breaks down each county.

Ireland will remain in COVID-19 lockdown until at least April 5 the Government have confirmed.

It's hoped that by the Summer time, pubs and restaurants will be able to open in some capacity, along with non-essential retail.

Yesterday, a further 738 cases of COVID-19 were announced, with 311 of those in Dublin.

As of February 24, 391,355 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Ireland:

  • 254,948 people have received their first dose
  • 136,407 people have received their second dose
