Coronavirus Ireland: Age profile of youngest people to die in Republic from Covid-19

Two people under the age of 35 have sadly died from the coronavirus since the outbreak began.

These patients were aged between 25 and 34, according to figures from the Health Surveillance Protection Centre.

One person above that age bracket - 35 to 44 - also passed away after contracting Covid-19.

And four people between 45 and 54 years of age died in Ireland after being diagnosed with the infection.

However, the HSPC did not reveal when these people passed away and if they had underlying conditions or not.

The genders of these cases are also not known.

These figures relate to 167 virus related deaths which were recorded as of midnight on Saturday.

Seven of these were in the 55-64 age bracket, while the majority of deaths (153) were in patients aged 65 and over.

However, the death toll in the Republic stood at 174 as of 1pm on Monday.

This followed the announcement by the Department of Health that 16 more people had died.

So far, 5,364 people here have tested positive for the infection.

Speaking on Monday, Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said: “Our research shows overall level of worry remains high at 7 out of 10 but has not increased significantly since the middle of March, despite the introduction of more restrictive measures.”

Dr Colm Henry, Chief Clinical Officer HSE, added: “Our Healthcare system has been preparing for a surge in COVID-19 cases but it is important to remind people that our hospitals continue to carry out all emergency and essential activity.”
