Coronavirus Ireland: 500 GAA staff to face pay cuts amid Covid-19 shutdown

GAA staff face pay cuts of at least 10% as the association endures a complete shutdown in the coronavirus pandemic.

The organisation ceased all activities on March 12 as government measures banned all sporting events until at least April 19.

But with financial uncertainty and the All-Ireland championships under threat, the GAA have confirmed that staff will take pay cuts.

GAA Director General Tom Ryan this week told staff that their wages would be cut by between 10-20% for the month of April.

Staff earning less than €38,000 per year face a 10% cut, while those in the €38,000-76,000 range will see their wages slashed by 15%.

500 employees will be affected, with the cuts set to be reviewed on a monthly basis.

The GAA called the shutdown last month to help curb the spread of Covid-19, with the remainder of the Allianz Leagues and April's club ties initially suspended.

Two games in this year's All-Ireland SFC have already been postponed, with it looking increasingly likely that the GAA's flagship competitions face a radical restructuring in order for them to be played.

According to estimates, the GAA would take a hit of some €60 million if the All-Ireland championships don't go ahead this year.
