Coronavirus Ireland: 4 new deaths, 16 additional cases confirmed

It has been confirmed that there are four new deaths from coronavirus in Ireland.

An additional 16 cases of the deadly bug have also been announced by the Department of Health.

The death toll from Covid-19 in the country is now 1,714.

There have been a total of 25,355 Covid-19 infections in Ireland.

Earlier, reusable and washable face masks went on sale in Lid today.

The coverings will be on sale for the price of €2.99 each.

It comes after earlier this week the Government officially launched a new face coverings campaign in a bid to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Health Minister Simon Harris, Transport Minister Shane Ross and National Transport Authority CEO Anne Graham made the announcement on Monday morning.

It is recommended that face coverings be worn in situations where social distancing is not possible and when around those aged over 70.

The Government has outlined the three scenarios in which face coverings should be worn.

  • When staying 2 metres apart from people is difficult - for example, in shops, shopping centres or public transport
  • By people visiting the homes of those who are cocooning
  • By people who are being visited in their homes by those who are cocooning

Mr Varadkar said: “Our message is simple; if you are in situations where social distancing is difficult, such as on public transport or in shops, please wear a face covering.

"It’s also a good idea to wear one when you are visiting someone who is vulnerable to the virus.

"In this way, we can help to reduce the spread of the virus, which is more important than ever as our country continues to reopen."

However, the cloth coverings should not be worn by anyone under the age of 13 and anyone who:

  • Has trouble breathing
  • Is unconscious or incapacitated
  • Is unable to remove it without help
  • Has a disability and who may feel upset or uncomfortable wearing the face covering

Minister Harris said: “Wearing a face covering will help you to protect those around you.

"It is not a magic shield, but it is an additional measure aimed at stopping the spread of this virus.

“If you cannot keep a 2 metre distance, we recommend you use face coverings."
