Coronavirus Ireland: 4 more deaths and 57 additional cases of COVID-19 confirmed

Another four people have lost their lives to coronavirus in Ireland with the death toll now standing at 1,608.

And 57 new cases were also confirmed by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC), bringing the total of infected people in the country to 24,639.

Unsurprisingly, Dublin has the highest number of cases at 11,873 (48% of all cases) followed by Cork with 1,428 cases (6%) and then Kildare with 1,392 cases (6%).

In a statement released this evening, the National Public Health Emergency Team said the HSE is now working to identify any contacts the newly infected patients have been in contact with.

The latest data from the Department of Health shows that of the 24,569 cases confirmed by midnight last Friday 7,819 of those cases are associated with healthcare workers, , accounting for 32% of the overall total.

A total of 3,222 equating to 13% were hospitalised with coronavirus and overall 394 were admitted to intensive care.

A total of 51 remain in ICU fighting for their lives,  which is down 68% from the peak in early April. 

The median age of confirmed cases is 48, with a split of 57% female, and 43% male.

Of those for whom transmission status is known: community transmission accounts for 59%, close contact accounts for 38%, travel abroad accounts for 3%.

HSE chief Paul Reid revealed this evening that the speed of tests being carried out been had ramped up - with 98% of tests returning a negative result and tests being processed in less than two days
