Coronavirus Ireland: 23 more deaths and 211 new cases of Covid-19 confirmed

A further 23 deaths and 211 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.

The latest figures bring the death toll in the Republic of Ireland to 1,339 and the total number of confirmed cases to 21,983.

The Department of Health announced the new cases at a press briefing on Tuesday.

The news comes as Ireland begins to gradually ease restrictions.

From today, people will be allowed take essential exercise within a 5km distance from their home and cocooning over 70s will be allowed out to exercise.

Since March 27, those aged over 70 have been “cocooning” in their homes as part of efforts to protect them from the disease.

All other restrictions remain in place and you can only leave the house for essential journeys and for exercise.

The advice from the Government is listed below;

  • to travel to and from work where the work is considered an essential service.
  • working in an essential shop, bank or post office.
  • to buy food, medicines and other health products for yourself, your family or someone who is vulnerable and cocooning
  • to attend medical appointments
  • for vital family reasons including caring for children, elderly or vulnerable people but excluding social family visits
  • From Tuesday 5 May,  you will be able to go up to 5 kilometres from your home to exercise
