Coronavirus Ireland: 16 deaths and 266 new cases confirmed

A further 16 people have died and 266 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed this evening.

The latest figures bring the death toll to 1,319 and the total number of cases in the Republic of Ireland to 21,772.

Out of the 21,437 confirmed cases reported by the Department of Health by midnight, Saturday, May 2, 58% are women and 42% are men.

The median age of the confirmed cases is 49.

The Department of Health say 13% of all confirmed cases by May 2, (2,840) have been hospitalised with 364 admitted to ICU.

A total of 6,211 cases are associated with healthcare workers.

Meanwhile, the number of people hospitalised in Ireland due to coronavirus has fallen in the last day to 900 on Sunday night, down from 950 on Saturday.

There are also fewer people in ICU than the peak of 160 last month, 93 confirmed cases, 20 with suspected Covid-19 and two deaths from Saturday to Sunday.

In Northern Ireland, the number of coronavirus deaths has risen to 387, after another six deaths were reported on Bank Holiday Monday.

Five of the notified deaths happened in the previous 24 hours.

The other fatality occurred prior to that but has only now been reported.
