Coronavirus Ireland: 10 things you still won't be able to do when lockdown is lifted on May 18

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will announce major changes to Ireland's lockdown starting on Monday, May 18.

As expected, the country is due to enter phase one of the Government's five-step roadmap.

This means gatherings of up to four people not from the same household will be permitted once per day.

However this will only be allowed as long as they live within 5km of each other, and that two-metre social distancing rules are adhered to at all times, the Irish Independent reports.

Other expected changes include the opening of DIY stores and garden centres, as well as any other shops that operate mostly outdoors.

The roadmap also suggests that public spaces where social distancing can be maintained such as car parks, beaches and mountain walks, will be reopened.

However there will still be a lot of restrictions in place, and we have compiled a list of 10 things you still won't be able to do from Monday:

1. Visits to households

People will still not be allowed to visit other households regardless of how far away they are.

This won't change until Phase 2 on June 8, when a group of up to four people can visit another household for a short period of time, while maintaining social distancing.

2. Travel more than 5km from home for non-essential reasons

Unfortunately, the 5km limit is expected to continue in phase 1, and unnecessary journeys are advised against.

The restriction is not set to be raised to 20km until phase 2, although the Government will still warn against any non-essential journeys.

Travel outside of your own region will not return until phase 4 on July 20.

3. Most retail outlets will remain closed

The only retail outlets that are expected to reopen on May 18 are large, primarily outdoor, shops such as garden centres, hardware stores and farmers markets.

Some outlets that were already open such as opticians, motor and bike repair, IT and electrical stores will also be open.

Some smaller outlets will be able to open in phase 2 on June 8.

4. Restaurants, cafes and bars

While there is some confusion over which bars and cafes will be allowed to open in phase 3 on June 29, we know for certain that none of them will be reopening on Monday.

5. Team sports

No team sports where social distancing cannot be maintained will be allowed to resume. That includes training sessions, not just matches.

The only sports that are set to restart in phase 1 are individual, outdoor ones such as tennis and golf, where social distancing can be practiced.

6. Libraries and playgrounds

While some public amenities such as carparks, beaches and mountain walks are set to reopen, others such as libraries and playgrounds will stay shut. Libraries are due to reopen in phase 2, playgrounds in phase 3.

7. Most non-essential indoor work

The only non-essential employees set to return on Monday are those that work outdoors, such as construction workers and gardeners. They will be returning on a phased basis.

A gradual return of solitary workers, or those that can maintain two-metre social distancing at all times, is expected in phase 2 on June 8.

8. Creches and pre-schools

In phase 1, some school and college buildings may be opened for access by teachers to enable remote learning, but no students will return.

Some creches and pre-schools are expected to reopen for children of essential workers in phase 3 at the end of June.

9. Theatres and cinemas

Theatres and cinemas are set to remain closed for a long time, with the Government not expecting them to reopen until phase 5 on August 10.

10.  Large social gatherings

On Monday, gatherings will be limited to a maximum of four people not from the same household. These meetings can only be held outdoors, and with strict social distancing maintained at all times.

You are also not allowed to travel more than 5km from your home.
