Coronavirus Ireland: 1,466 new cases confirmed with 402 in hospital

Irish health officials have reported 1,466 new Covid cases across the county over the past 24 hours.

The number of Covid patients in hospital sits at 402 with 73 patients in Intensive Care Units.

Yesterday’s hospital figure of 400 was the highest number recorded since the height of the pandemic in March.

Longford has taken the top spot for the highest incidence rate nationwide, according to the latest HPSC data for the week of September 29 to October 5.

The midlands county has an incidence rate of 643.5 for the fortnight preceding October 5.

Meanwhile, despite high case numbers, the plan remains for the next easing of restrictions next week.

The return of nightclubs and other late night venues will be welcomed by many, as well as the end to the requirement of social distancing as we move as close to normal life as possible for the time being.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin confirmed that we "are on track" to lift all rules but the requirement for masks will remain in healthcare settings, indoor retail and on public transport.
