Coronavirus Ireland: 1,185 new cases confirmed by health officials as Dr Holohan says country is 'on track' to reopen

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has today been notified of 1,185 confirmed cases of Covid-19.

As of 8am today, 292 patients are hospitalised with coronavirus, of which 65 are in ICU.

There has been a total of 5,179 deaths related to Covid notified in Ireland.

This includes 24 deaths newly notified in the past week - since last Wednesday.

The five-day moving average is 1,212.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said: “COVID-19 vaccines are providing very effective protection from severe illness and have fundamentally changed the risk profile of this disease.

"Since the 1st of April, approximately 4 out of every 5 people admitted to ICU and approximately 3 out of every 4 deaths with COVID-19 were not fully vaccinated. It remains vital that those who have not yet received a COVID-19 vaccine do so at the earliest opportunity.

“If you are fully protected through vaccination, then you can have confidence that your vaccination, and your continued adherence to the public health advice appropriate to each environment, is the best way you can protect yourself from COVID-19.”

The stats come as members of NPHET told TDs of the latest available data on how the Covid situation stands in Ireland presently.

The number of outbreaks in schools more than tripled in the past week with 40 new outbreaks with 191 linked cases - 34 of these in primary schools.

Chair of NPHET modelling, Professor Philip Nolan has also revealed that it is “plausible” to say the country is past the peak of the Delta wave.

Dr Holohan moved to reassure TDs at the Dáil’s Health Committee on Wednesday after he said he could not rule out the reintroduction of restrictions again in the future.

He said: "What I'm really saying is, we can never absolutely rule anything out, but we don't think we're going to be in a situation where some of the significant restrictions that were imposed on the Irish population are likely to be necessary, on the basis of anything that we see in front of us right now.

"In broad terms, we're optimistic about the trajectory of the disease at this point in time and the likelihood that over the course of the coming weeks, important criteria that we set out in our last advice to Government that need to be satisfied before we think we're able to move on will be met.
