GENEVA -- The number of people infected with the new coronavirus reached 101,065 worldwide as of 1 p.m. JST on Saturday, according to a survey by The Yomiuri Shimbun, which compiled the figures issued by each government.
About three months have passed since the first case was confirmed in Wuhan, China, in December last year, and the infection has since spread to 96 countries and regions. There is still no prospect for the end of the outbreak. The World Health Organization has called on each country to strengthen its countermeasures.
According to the survey, mainland China has the largest number of infected people at 80,651, accounting for about 80% of the total, followed by 6,767 in South Korea, 4,747 in Iran and 3,916 in Italy.
Of those infected worldwide, 3,492 people have died.
Meanwhile, more than 55,000 people -- over half of those infected with the virus -- have recovered, according to a survey by Johns Hopkins University in the United States.
The number of people infected with the new coronavirus worldwide far exceeds the 8,096 people infected with SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) as of December 2003, which was caused by another coronavirus between 2002 and 2003.
