The total number of people who have tested positive for the coronavirus in Tokyo surpassed the 200,000 mark, after 1,429 people were newly confirmed as having contracted the virus on Monday.
A total of 200,720 cases have occurred in the capital since the outbreak of the coronavirus.
The figure was a record number for a Monday, overtaking the previous high of 1,252 on Jan. 11, which happened during the third wave of the pandemic.
Tokyo has set a record for the highest number of cases for a day of the week two days in a row.
Infections have also surpassed 1,000 for seven days in a row.
According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, 702 more people tested positive than a week ago. The daily average in the last seven days was 1,553.9, an increase of 41.2% from the previous week when the average was 1,100.4. The number of COVID-19 patients showing serious symptoms was 78, six more than the day before.
