Coronavirus infections falling across England but rates still highest in East Midlands

Coronavirus infections are falling across England but remain the highest in the East Midlands.

The latest Public Health England surveillance report says case rates per 100,000 have fallen across most regions.

They are highest in the East Midlands, with a rate of 167.1, the report for week 7 of 2021, from 15 to 21 February, reveals.

But the rate was down from 181.0 in the previous week.

The West Midlands recorded the second highest rate: 152.1, down from 175.5.

South-west England recorded the lowest rate: 68.1, down from 89.3.

Covid-19 case rates fell in all regions of England except Yorkshire and the Humber.

In Yorkshire and the Humber the rate of new cases stood at 150.1 per 100,000 people in the seven days to February 21, a slight increase from 149.5 the previous week.

Case rates in England are also continuing to fall among all age groups, Public Health England said.

The highest rate is among 30 to 39-year-olds, which stood at 174.4 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to February 21, down week-on-week from 197.6.

Among 20 to 29-year-olds the rate dropped from 178.0 to 157.3, and for 40 to 49-year-olds it fell from 166.9 to 144.6.

For people aged 80 and over, the rate fell from 133.7 to 98.6.

Hospital admission rates for Covid-19 have also fallen across all regions, the report confirmed.

The hospital admission rate was 11.73 per 100,000 in week 7, compared to 15.07 per 100,000 in the previous week.

Dr Yvonne Doyle, Medical Director at Public Health England, said: “Evidence suggests that the lockdown has been successful in bringing down rates of infection.

"This in turn has led to fewer people going into hospital and reduced the strain on the NHS.

"However, there is still significant pressure on our health service and case rates need to continue to fall.

“The roadmap has been set out, but for now we must remain vigilant.

"The return to normality will be a slow process and increasing your number of contact now could cost lives.

"It is vital that you continue to follow the rules and stay home, it will save lives.”
