Coronavirus infection rate in Leeds more than doubles in a week as rates rise across Yorkshire

Leeds' coronavirus infection rate has more than doubled within a week, according to the latest Public Health England figures.

Recent data shows how infection rates across Yorkshire continued to rise over the week up to September 7, with Bradford and Leeds seeing the highest increase in coronavirus cases.

Leeds recorded 536 new cases in the time period, which saw the city's infection rate more than double from 33.5 to 67.6 cases per 100,000 people.

The surge in the infection rate is cause for concern considering previous warnings that additional restrictions may be imposed on the city if rates continue to rise.

Bradford has the highest infection rate in Yorkshire, having jumped from 59.3 to 82.3 cases per 100,000 people after 444 positive Covid-19 tests were recorded in the weekly period.

Elsewhere, there was also a near-tenfold increase in the rate in Selby, North Yorkshire, where an additional 49 cases saw the rate rise from 5.5 to 54.1 per 100,000 people.

Hambleton was the only area in Yorkshire to see its infection rate go down, dropping from 15.3 per 100,000 people to 8.7.

The figures, for the seven days to September 7, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

Data for the most recent three days (September 8-10) has been excluded as it is incomplete and likely to be revised.

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency and is based on Public Health England data published on September 10 on the government’s coronavirus online dashboard.
