Over 20% of the 2,059 COVID-19 patients who died in West Bengal were 61 years of age and older, a senior health department official said.

According to the official, who is also a doctor, most of those belonging to the age bracket of 61-75 years were found suffering from hypertension, diabetes or other ailments such as renal disease, cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which ultimately led to their demise.

At least 20.79% of 2,059 COVID-19 victims were 61 years of age and above, the health department official said

Of them, 14.18% were over 75 years, and 6.61% belonged to the age group of 61-75 years, he said.

WHO says COVID-19 seems to lack seasonal pattern

The emergencies chief for the World Health Organization said that COVID-19 doesn’t seem to follow the seasonal patterns that some viruses exhibit, making it harder to control.

Unlike other respiratory viruses like influenza that spread mainly in the winter, the coronavirus pandemic is accelerating in the summer. That’s despite earlier predictions from some scientists and politicians it would fade in the heat.

This virus has demonstrated no seasonal pattern as such, said Dr Michael Ryan at a press briefing on Monday. What it has clearly demonstrated is that if you take the pressure off the virus, the virus bounces back, he said.

The United States set a record for coronavirus cases with more than 5 million people now infected, according to a Reuters tally, as the country's top infectious diseases official offered hope earlier this week that an effective vaccine might be available by year-end.

With one out of every 66 residents infected, the United States leads the world in COVID-19 cases, according to a Reuters analysis.

The country has recorded more than 160,000 deaths, nearly a quarter of the world's total. - Reuters
