Coronavirus India lockdown Day 124 updates | July 26, 2020

India has now hiked its coronavirus (COVID-19) sample testing capacity to over 4 lakh tests per day with 4,20,898 samples tested in the last 24 hours, according to a release issued by the Union Health Ministry on Saturday.

“With this, the Tests Per Million (TPM) has further increased to 11,485 and cumulative testing to 1,58,49,068. This elevated number comes on the heels of 3,50,000 tests having been done every day consistently over the last one week,” added the Ministry.

Goa COVID-19 tally rises to 4,861 with 175 new cases

Goa on Sunday reported 175 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total count to 4,861, a Health official said.

With two more succumbing to the infection, the death toll went up to 35, he said.

A total of 230 people were discharged during the day, taking the number of recovered cases to 3,277 and that of active cases to 1,549, he added.

Maharashtra Minister Sanjay Bansode tests positive

Maharashtra Minister of State for Environment and FDA Sanjay Bansode on Sunday said he had been detected with COVID-19 and was receiving treatment at a private hospital in Mumbai.

Mr. Bansode, NCP MLA from Udgir in Latur district, said he was feeling unwell since Saturday and had mild fever as well as sore throat.

Kairana Lok Sabha member Pradeep Choudhary, his wife, son and three domestic helps tested positive for COVID-19 in Saharanpur on Sunday, an official said.

Bengal reports 40 new COVID-19 deaths, 2,341 fresh cases

The COVID-19 death toll in West Bengal rose to 1,372 on Sunday with 40 new fatalities, a bulletin released by the state Health department said.

The COVID-19 tally climbed to 58,718 with 2,341 fresh instances of the viral infections reported from different districts, it added.

35 more people infected with COVID-19 in Chandigarh; tally reaches 887

Thirty-five more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Chandigarh in 24 hours, taking the total caseload in the Union Territory to 887 on Sunday.

The COVID-19 death toll in the city stood at 13.

Various entrance exams put off due to COVID-19 in Chhattisgarh

The Chhattisgarh government on Sunday put off entrance exams for admission to various professional courses, including engineering and pharmacy, for the academic session 2020-21 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

An order issued by the state’s Skill Development and Technical Education department said admission in these courses will be done based on marks obtained in the previous academic qualification, an official said.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, entrance examinations, Pre-Engineering Test (PET), Pre-Pharmacy Test (PPhT), Pre Polytechnic Test (PPT) and Pre-Masters of Computer Application (PMCA) will not be held for the academic session 2020-21, the order said.

Karnataka sees highest one-day spurt of 5,199 COVID-19 cases

Karnataka on Sunday witnessed the highest single day spike in coronavirus cases with 5,199 additions, taking the aggregate in the state to 96,141, while 82 succumbed to the virus, the health department said.

There are 58,417 active cases including 632 in the ICUs whereas the 2,088 discharges on Sunday took the total discharges to 35,838, the department said in the bulletin.

The positive cases were led by Bengaluru urban district with 1,950 infections, followed by 579 in Ballari, 230 in Mysuru, 213 in Bengaluru Rural, 199 in Dakshina Kannada among other districts.

Gujarat records 1,110 new cases

Gujarat records 1,110 COVID-19 infections and 21 deaths, increasing its fatality count to 2326 and infections to 55822.

Number of active cases jump to 13131 including 85 on ventilator while total discharges are 40,365.

COVID-19 test report mandatory to attend Nagaland assembly session

All legislators and assembly secretariat staff will have to undergo a mandatory test for COVID-19 and carry the report to attend the one-day session on July 30, according to an official statement.

Speaker Sharingain Longkumer has decided that all those coming to the premises, including ministers, advisors, MLAs, and officers and staff of the secretariat, will have to undergo the COVID-19 test and carry the report with them, the statement issued by assembly commissioner and secretary P. J. Antony said on Saturday.

Karnataka Forest Minister Anand Singh tests positive for COVID-19

Karnataka Forest Minister Anand Singh has tested positive for COVID-19, sources close to him said on Sunday.

Anand Singh, whose swab was collected on Friday, was found infected with the coronavirus on Saturday night.

However, he is asymptomatic, his close aides told P T I.

“He has been tested positive but he is asymptomatic and is quarantined,” his confidante said requesting anonymity.

7:35 p.m. | Maharashtra

Maharashtra reports 9431 new cases

Maharashtra reported its fifth consecutive spike of more than 9,000 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, as 9,431 cases took the State's total case tally to 3,75,799.

A high fatality surge of 267 deaths saw the total death toll to 13,656. Of the total case tally, 1,48,601 are active ones, said State Health Department officials. With 6,044 patients discharged today, the cumulative recoveries till date has  gone up to 2,13,238.

Pune district reported yet another massive surge of more than 2,500 new cases with 55 new deaths as its total case tally surged to 76,203 while its death toll reached 1,793.

With 1,101 new cases today, Mumbai's total case tally reached has 1,09,161 of whom only 22,536 are active though. With 57 new deaths reported today, the city's death toll has risen to 6,093. Thane district reported 23 deaths while Jalgaon reported 15 fatalities.

India could fast-track clearances on imported vaccine candidates

Indian companies looking to import or test potential COVID-19 vaccines, that have been developed internationally, could get leeway in the number of India-specific tests and trials they would need conduct, says a guidance document from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT).

Normally, a vaccine that has been licensed in another country, would still need to repeat all human safety tests in India.

Fight prejudice against COVID patients, says Venkaiah Naidu

Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday expressed anguish over instances of stigmatising of COVID-19 patients and denial of dignified last rites to people who succumb to the virus.

He said such incidents were totally uncalled for and urged local communities and the society at large to prevent the recurrence of such happenings.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Naidu said “the need of the hour is to fight prejudice and nip it in the bud. Otherwise, it can become more toxic than fake news and misinformation”.

Eight-day lockdown begins in Nagaland’s Dimapur district

An eight-day total lockdown began in Dimapur, the commercial hub of Nagaland, from Sunday to stem the spread of COVID-19, district task force officials said.

Out of the 1,339 coronavirus positive cases in the State, Dimapur district with 527 has the highest number of people infected by the virus followed by Kohima with 334 confirmed cases, health officials said.

The Kohima district administration had already announced a seven-day lockdown starting from July 25 in the state capital.

Rajasthan Governor expresses concern over growing coronavirus infections in State

Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra on Sunday expressed concern over growing coronavirus infections in the state, and said the number of active cases has tripled since July 1.

According to a Raj Bhawan statement, the governor directed that serious efforts should be made to control the spread of the disease. He noted that active COVID-19 cases have tripled in the state since July 1.

The governor’s remarks come in the backdrop of a tug of war with the state government over convening of an Assembly session.

Uttar Pradesh sees record single-day spike of 3,246 COVID-19 cases; 39 deaths reported

Uttar Pradesh recorded its highest single-day spike of 3,246 COVID-19 cases on Sunday, taking the State’s tally to 66,988.

However, according to a health bulletin issued here by the state government, 3,260 fresh cases were reported.

As many as 39 more people died due to COVID-19 in the state, pushing the toll to 1,426, the bulletin said.

Filmmaker-satirist Armando Iannucci on Sunday urged streaming services of studios like Amazon, Disney and Apple to donate funds in the support of theatres in the U.K. amid the coronavirus pandemic.

His appeal comes weeks after Netflix pledged 500k pounds to launch the initiative by director Sam Mendes, in association with the Society of London Theatre and U.K. Theatre.

Hyderabad Mayor Bonthu Rammohan on Sunday said he has tested positive for COVID-19 but was asymptomatic.

COVID-19 positivity rate in Ganjam district has dropped by over 50%: Collector

Unabated surge in COVID-19 cases in Odisha’s Ganjam notwithstanding, the administration claimed that the coronavirus positivity rate has dropped by over 50% of what it was around three weeks ago in the district.

The south Odisha district, which has emerged as the COVID hotspot in the state with its heavy caseload, has so far recorded 8,678 cases and 79 fatalities, officials said.

Puducherry CM, Ministers, MLAs to undergo COVID-19 test

Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy, his cabinet colleagues, the territorial Assembly Speaker V.P. Sivakolundhu and all the legislators would undergo COVID-19 test after an AINRC MLA who attended the budget session tested positive for the virus.

The tests would be done for all 32 MLAs on Monday and Tuesday at the assembly premises and the nearby Health Department office, a spokesman of the Assembly Secretariat told PTI on Sunday.

MMCH woman pharmacy staff member tests positive for COVID-19, 50 put on quarantine

Fifty staff members of the Malabar Medical College Hospital at nearby Ulleyeri have been put on mandatory quarantine after a pregnant woman working in the pharmacy department tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday.

The woman, who is eight months pregnant, was among 80 employees whose samples were collected for testing recently, hospital sources said.

36,145 patients recover from COVID-19 — highest in a day: Health Ministry

As many as 36,145 patients have recuperated from COVID-19 in a span of 24 hours, the highest recorded in a day, pushing the recovery rate to 63.92%, the Union Health Ministry said on Sunday.

The COVID-19 case fatality rate has further dropped to 2.31%, the ministry said.

Health ministry decides against including Itolizumab in clinical management protocols for COVID-19

The National Task Force on COVID-19 has decided against including Itolizumab drug in clinical management protocols for treating the disease even though the DCGI has approved its “restricted emergency use” in infected patients, official sources said.

Considering the unmet medical needs in COVID-19, Itolizumab, an already approved drug of Biocon, used for treating psoriasis - a skin condition - was approved for “restricted emergency use” in the treatment of coronavirus by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) recently.

No mass prayers in Eidgah for Bakrid; Up to 50 allowed at a time in mosques: Karnataka govt.

The Karnataka government has allowed Eid-ul-Azha prayers only in mosques that too with a maximum of 50 people at a time and said mass prayers at Eidgah and other places are prohibited in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

People visiting mosques for the prayers have to wear face masks and maintain social distancing, Minority Welfare and Wakf Department Secretary A B Ibrahim said in an order issued on Friday.

Australia’s migration intake will drop significantly to 31,000 in 2020-21 from 232,000 in 2018-19 due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, impacting thousands of Indians planning to emigrate to this country.

While the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Australian economy are still evolving, migration, which is a key driver of the economy, has been hit following the travel bans, border closures imposed earlier this year since the contagion began.

Odisha migrant workers stay back with COVID-19 situation exploding back home

According to civil society organisations and individuals, more than 10,000 migrant workers have decided to stay back in Tamil Nadu. The steep rise in positive cases in Odisha and drying up of employment opportunities have influenced their decision.  In July, State’s COVID-19 tally just tripled while death-toll increased by almost five times. 

Of late, employers have taken extra care to ensure workers do not face any problem on industry premises.

PM to launch COVID-19 testing facilities in Noida, Mumbai and Kolkata on Monday

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch on Monday “high throughput” COVID-19 testing facilities in Noida, Mumbai and Kolkata, which will ramp up testing capacity and help strengthen early detection and treatment in the country, the Prime Minister’s Office said.

The virtual launch event will be attended by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and the chief ministers of Maharashtra, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh -- Uddhav Thackeray, Mamata Banerjee and Yogi Adityanath respectively.

India’s COVID-19 recovery rate is better compared to other countries and its case fatality rate is much less as well, but the threat of the deadly virus is far from over, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday.

In his monthly ‘Mann ki Baat’ radio address, he also said that at many places, the virus is spreading fast and people need to be extra vigilant.

Over 30 bank staff test positive for COVID-19 in T.N. branch

As many as 38 employees of the main branch of a leading nationalised bank in Trichy have tested positive for coronavirus, officials from the bank and the local civic body said on Sunday.

According to the officials, the customers who visited the bank have also been advised to voluntarily appear for coronavirus tests.

A day after Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said he has tested coronavirus positive, some state ministers and BJP leaders who recently met him have quarantined themselves at their homes and are undergoing tests for the disease.

A two-member team of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) visited Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district to find a suitable location for setting up a 500-bed temporary COVID-19 hospital, an official said on Sunday.

The hospital, to be built on the lines of another facility set up by the DRDO in Delhi, will cater to coronavirus patients in north Bihar, he said.

Nagpur COVID-19 plan: Antigen tests, focus on critical cases

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation will admit asymptomatic patients in COVID-19 care centres while others with moderate to severe symptoms will be treated in dedicated COVID hospitals, civic chief Tukaram Mundhe said on Sunday.

High risk contacts of COVID-19 patients will now be kept in home isolation and only those from congested areas and smaller homes will be kept in quarantine centres, Mundhe said while explaining NMC’s new strategy to fight the outbreak.

Scientists have identified a gene in humans which they say could be an essential player in the immune response against the novel coronavirus, an advance that may lead to better understanding and treatment of COVID-19.

The research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, analysed variation of the genetic makeup of four young male patients with severe COVID-19 from two families, who did not have any preexisting medical conditions that made them predisposed to the deadly disease.

On the last Sunday of intense lockdown this month, Tamil Nadu came to a virtual standstill with the operation of only milk supply and health care services while people stayed indoors and roads wore a deserted look.

To check violations and effectively implement the complete shutdown, being enforced to contain spread of coronavirus, checkposts were set up at key intersections and district borders with nearly 200 of them in the city, police said.

Barring senior citizens from film sets not discriminatory: Govt.

The decision to restrain persons above 65 years of age from attending shootings on film and television sets was not to discriminate against them, and was taken in the general interest of such people, the Maharashtra government has told the Bombay High Court.

The government, however, also said no data or statistics were taken into consideration while prohibiting those above the age of 65 on sets of film and TV shows.

The mandal and constituency headquarters town of Dubbak is slowly becoming hotbed for the spread of coronavirus and the increasing numbers have been creating fear among public.

According to sources, more than 15 cases of coronavirus have been reported in the town. The municipal representative had also initally tested positive for the virus before being tested negative eventually. Those infected includes officials from police, medical and other departments.

Sikkim reports first COVID-19 death

Sikkim reported its first COVID-19 death on Sunday after a 74-year-old man succumbed to the disease at a state-run hospital here, a senior health official said.

The man was a resident of Rongli sub-division of East Sikkim district, the official said.

The man died due to COVID-19 early in the morning, Director General-cum-Secretary, Health, Dr Pema T. Bhutia said.

COVID-19: Call for special prayers in Assam to rid world of virus

After church leaders in Mizoram and Nagaland, heads of ‘satras’ in Assam have sought divine intervention on July 30 for ridding the earth of the novel coronavirus that claimed 100 human lives in the northeast till July 26 morning.

A ‘satra’ is a monastery of the Vaishnav order that the 16th century saint-scholar Srimanta Sankaradeva had propagated. Assam has some 900 ’satras’ that are central to the Assamese culture.

Telangana records 1,593 new COVID-19 cases; eight deaths

As many as 1,593 new COVID-19 cases and eight deaths were reported in Telangana, taking the tally to 54,059 and the toll to 463, the state government said on Sunday.

Of the fresh cases, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) areas accounted for 641, followed by Ranga Reddy district 171, Warangal Urban 131 and Medchal district 91, a bulletin giving the details as of 8 pm on Saturday said.

Italy: Heavy fines for no masks in closed public spaces

Failure to wear a mask inside stores in the southern city of Salerno has proven costly.

Three people in the port city in the Campania region received 1,000-euro ($1,150) fines on Saturday, Corriere della Sera reported.

Campania Governor Vincenzo De Luca signed an ordinance on Friday establishing fines up to 1,000 euros for not wearing masks in closed public places.

South Africa has announced more than 12,000 new confirmed coronavirus cases as the total in one of the world’s worst affected countries reaches 434,200 with 6,655 deaths.

Odisha’s COVID-19 tally crosses 25,000-mark

Odisha’s COVID-19 case count crossed the 25,000-mark on Sunday with 1,376 new infections, while the toll mounted to 140 as 10 more patients succumbed to the disease, a health official said.

The state’s tally now stands at 25,389, he said.

Of the fresh cases, 917 were reported from quarantine centres and 459 detected during local contact tracing, according to the official.

Of the 79 persons who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 on Saturday, only four had arrived from outside the State, and all 75 others acquired the infection through local contact.

In an attempt to ensure widespread testing, antigen tests will soon be conducted at primary health centres, said Dr. N.K. Kuttappan, District Medical Officer.

IIT-Kharagpur develops technology for rapid COVID-19 testing

 

Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur ( IIT-KGP) have developed a new technology for low cost COVID-19 tests using a portable device. The test results can be made available in a customised smartphone application for dissemination within one hour without requiring manual interpretation, researchers said.

The minister had voluntarily given his throat swab on Friday and the result was out late on Saturday. He has, however, developed no symptoms of the disease thus far and his health condition is stable.

Since he is an asymptomatic patient, he would get isolated and treated at his residence in Hospete, the sources close to Mr. Singh said.

West Bengal on Saturday recorded yet again the highest single-day number of deaths due to COVID-19 recording 42, as the State observed a complete lockdown. The deaths now stand at 1,332.

All modes of transport were off the road as police have strictly enforced the lockdown in Kolkata and the districts. There were no flights from the Kolkata airport and very few trains from Howrah and Sealdah. Across the city, police personnel were seen enforcing the lockdown

J&K touches 44,744-mark in per million testing

 

Jammu and Kashmir has reached the mark of 44,744 as against 12,742 in the country in per million testing, officials as 523 infections on Saturday pushed the tally to 17,305. A J&K spokesman said the recovery rate in the Union Territory is 53.01%. It is a major dip compared to the figures of 68% last month.

'Special family pension' for dependents of govt staff who die of COVID-19

 

The Bihar Cabinet on Saturday agreed to give “special family pension” to the dependents of state government staff who die of COVID-19 while on duty, according to an official release.

The dependent of a government employee, who die of COVID-19 while on duty, will be given the benefit of compassionate ground, for getting a job, besides other existing benefits, Cabinet Secretariat Department’s Special Secretary Mithilesh Kumar Singh said in the release.

Total lockdown today in 3 municipalities

With no respite in the spread of COVID-19 cases in the district, the police authorities have announced a one-day total lockdown in Madanapalle, Puttur and Nagari municipalities on Sunday. After seeing close to 700 cases on Friday, the district tally is racing towards the 8,000 mark, with 68 deaths so far.

The alarming spike in the new cases reported daily since a week has slowly changed the public mood, with fear and uncertainty replacing the earlier relaxed demeanour, particularly in the areas bordering Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

T.N. reports highest daily case load, recoveries and deaths

 

Tamil Nadu on Saturday reported its highest-ever COVID-19 cases, recoveries and deaths on a single day. There were 6,988 fresh cases, 89 deaths and 7,758 recoveries. With the recoveries exceeding the new cases, the number of active cases came down from 53,132 on Friday to 52,273.

The State crossed the 6,000-mark for the third consecutive day, with 22 of the 36 districts reporting more than 100 cases. Of them, 13 had more than 200 cases.
