Coronavirus in sport: Grants to pay for immediate basic needs of horse racing workers

Grants are available to cover the immediate basic needs of employees in the horse racing industry.

Charity Racing Welfare is providing financial help for workers to pay for food, electricity and heating.

The scheme is open to anyone who believes they may be eligible and participants will be subject to a needs-based assessment.

Single applicants can apply for a fortnightly amount of £150, while families could pick up £210 to cover essentials.

Chief executive of Racing Welfare, Dawn Goodfellow, said: "The provision of hardship grants has been developed in response to the Covid-19 outbreak to help those most in need of support quickly.

"We recognise that the situation is affecting the lives of people living and working in racing in many different ways, with immediate financial need being just one of these."

The grants will be financed by a fund established by The Racing Foundation, The John Pearce Foundation and other racing charities.

Racing Welfare is the only one which provides support to everyone working behind the scenes in the industry.

It is estimated around 20,000 people are employed directly in the sport, which is worth approximately £4.1 billion to the UK economy.

BHA chiefs are working towards restarting the sport's fixtures from May 1.

Over the next few weeks, executives will make sure everything is in place for an updated programme to be given the green light, beginning with Flat meetings.

BHA’s Executive Director Will Lambe said: "The streamlined process for hardship grants is to be welcomed, whilst British racing’s leadership continues its work with government and determines how other financial resources can be best used to support the industry.”
