Coronavirus in Spain - Is it safe to travel, are flights cancelled and how many people have it?

The Government has advised against all but essential travel to Spain as the country declared a state of national emergency.

Spain has seen 8,000 cases of the coronavirus while the country's death toll has reached 294 as of March 15.

On Saturday, Spain introduced a series of significant restrictions on movement, while UK airlines have cancelled flights.

Is it still safe to travel to Spain? We take a look at the latest advice.

Where in Spain is infected with coronavirus?

Coronavirus has spread to every region of Spain.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises against all but essential travel to Spain.

Transport services will be operating at reduced levels.

Public gatherings are banned, most shops other than those selling food or other essential items such as pharmacies will be closed, many businesses and all schools and universities are closed and all citizens have been instructed to remain at home except to buy food or other essential items.

Is it safe to travel to Spain?

UK nationals currently in Spain should follow the advice of local authorities. Anybody planning to travel to Spain should consult their airline or tour operator.

Over the weekend, Jet2, Tui and easyJet announced flights would be cancelled until further notice.

easyJet said flights from March 7 until March 29 will be cancelled and "only a number of rescue flights will operate". Passengers who have their flights cancelled will receive an email and SMS with details of how to book onto the rescue flights.

Can I cancel my holiday to Spain?

Anyone who has booked flights or accommodation directly should contact their airline and accommodation provider to see what flexibility they are offering.

They should also check their travel insurance as it may cover non-refundable cancellation costs for trips to areas where the FCO is advising against all but essential travel.

It's worth noting that most airlines are cancelling flights over the next few weeks - so if you're due to travel in a few months, your flight may not be affected.
