Coronavirus in Scotland: Two new deaths recorded as cases rise by 800

Two new deaths of people with positive coronavirus test have been registered in Scotland in the past 24 hours, bringing the country's death toll to 4,111.

The latest figures released by the Scottish Government also confirm that 800 new Covid-19 cases were recorded overnight, making up 5.2% of all tests and bringing the total number of positive tests to 106,170.

179 of the new cases occurred in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area while 116 were in Lanarkshire.

69 people were in hospital with the virus last night, while two were in intensive care.

It comes as the Scottish Government confirmed care home residents and staff will begin receiving the Pfizer vaccine from tomorrow.

This follows more than 5,000 key NHS workers and vaccinators receiving the jab in the first few days of the programme.

Cabinet Secretary for Health, Jeane Freeman, said that care home residents would be prioritised in rolling out the vaccine from current supplies but warned that pace of the vaccine delivery programme remains dependent on the supply of doses.
