Coronavirus in Scotland: 'Serious concern' after 70 new cases shows huge testing backlog

Scotland has reported a total of 70 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures have shown that the 70 new cases represent 2.7 per cent of those tested on Sunday.

Nicola Sturgeon announced the news at the daily coronavirus briefing, to which she added that there is now "serious concern" that there is a back log in test results that is affecting the daily case reports.

The official breakdown of daily cases by health board will be available later this afternoon, with Glasgow, Lanarkshire and the Lothians reporting the highest number of daily cases over the last few days.

Both Glasgow and Lanarkshire are currently under heavier lockdown rules which do not permit indoor gatherings of any kind.

From today, Scotland has also introduced the 'rule of six', meaning that only six people from two different households are allowed to gather both indoors and outdoors.

Monday also saw a rise in hospital admissions for the virus, with 264 patients being treated across the country as well as seven in intensive care units.

The First Minister also reported that no new deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours.

On Sunday, Scotland reported a 244 new cases of the virus, making it the highest daily figure since May.

Over the last week, there has been an average of over 100 new cases per day as the virus continues to spread again.
