Coronavirus in Scotland: Pregnant medics raise fears over coming to work

Pregnant nurses and doctors have voiced concerns after being told to report to work as normal.

One worker at a Glasgow hospital who contacted the Record said she was concerned about the coronavirus risk to her baby but was told she cannot opt to stay at home.

NHS managers have been trying to find duties that do not involve mixing with patients but workers in some wards fear this may not be possible.

The worker said: “My manager has said that I can only go home and self isolate if I have symptoms but I’m really worried about the baby.

“There are no jobs within a hospital that could be considered as isolating staff from the public but I’m not sure what duties I could be given to work from home.

“We need to have some clarity on this and surely anyone who is expecting a baby should not be asked to turn uop to a hospital environment.”

A spokesperson for Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS said moves were being made to keep p[pregnant staff in work but out of risk.

The spokesperson said: “The welfare of our staff is paramount as we deal with the COVID-19 situation and we are taking every action to ensure their safety and the safety of our patients.

“We are following current guidance received from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and local line managers are risk assessing pregnant staff to ensure they are not at risk from COVID-19.

“We are also working with our pregnant staff to identify opportunities to allow them to work flexibly, be this from home, or in a different capacity to avoid roles where they are working directly with patients.

“We are also ensuring that pregnant staff are using the appropriate PPE if required in their work settings.”
