Coronavirus in Scotland - patient in Greater Glasgow dead as Scottish cases rise to 195

A person being treated for coronavirus in Greater Glasgow has died as the number of cases in the area has risen by five.

A total of 49 positive tests have been confirmed in Greater Glasgow & Clyde, up from 44 yesterday.

The updated figures, released by the Scottish Government minutes ago, confirm that 195 have tested positive for the virus in Scotland - up from 171 yesterday.

A statement issued by the Scottish Government said: "Two patients with coronavirus have now died in Scotland.

"An elderly patient with underlying health conditions who tested positive for coronavirus has died.

"This follows the first death of a patient in Scotland with coronavirus, which was announced on Friday, March 13 2020".

Chief Medical Officer Catherine Calderwood said: “I am very saddened to report that an elderly patient with underlying health conditions, who has tested positive for coronavirus, has died. They were being treated by the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board.

“I offer my deepest condolences to their friends and family at this difficult time. No further information will be available to protect patient confidentiality".

A total of 5146 Scottish tests have been concluded, with 5051 confirmed negative.

The news comes after a Glasgow GP tested positive for the virus after a patient was confirmed to have the disease.

Cinemas in the city have joined theatres in closing their doors as a result of the Government's advice that people avoid going to pubs, clubs and theatres and similar social spaces amid the outbreak.
