Coronavirus in Scotland: Number of cases in Glasgow reaches 449 as Scottish total jumps by 179

The number of positive coronavirus cases in Glasgow has risen by 48 overnight.

In Greater Glasgow and Clyde, a total of 449 cases have been confirmed, up from 401 cases yesterday.

Forty-seven deaths as a consequence of the virus in Scotland have now been recorded.

The latest figures, released by the Scottish Government this afternoon, state that a total of 14,624 tests have been conducted, with 1563 of them diagnosed as positive - an increase of 179 from yesterday.

The news comes after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that the SEC will be turned into a temporary hospital for Covid-19 patients.

The SEC facility will initially create an additional 300 beds, but could have the capacity for 1,000 patients.

While Ms Sturgeon also confirmed that breast, cervical and bowel screenings are to be suspended across Scotland amid the coronavirus crisis.

They are among several NHS screening programmes to be paused to allow for healthcare staff to be re-allocated to support other essential services .
