Coronavirus in Scotland: No new deaths but spike in cases for second day as 23 recorded overnight

No Scots have died of coronavirus for the third day in a row with 23 new cases reported.

The figures, announced by the Scottish Government this afternoon, come after new cases spiked yesterday to 21.

The total number of positive cases in the country now stand at 18,445.

Hospital deaths from the virus remain at 2,491.

It was revealed the number of patients getting treatment for both confirmed and suspected cases of the virus currently stands at 302

 – with a total of 4 in intensive care.

The number comes after we told how the Isle of Eigg has taken the decision to close it’s doors to visitors, urging people not to come to the island as Scottish Tourism begins to reopen.

The decision was made after a vote in the community and is in order to protect vulnerable residents – with 30% of islanders in the at risk category.

Scotland’s easing of lockdown coincided with the latest weekly report from the National Records which found 13 people died from suspected Covid-19 cases in the week up to July 12 - a decrease of five from the previous seven day period, and the eleventh week in a row the number has fallen.
