Nicola Sturgeon speech: First Minister to announce new measures for universities later today

Nicola Sturgeon is set to announce new measures for Scottish universities later today (Thursday 24 September).

The First Minister called on undergraduates who have recently moved into shared accommodation to follow rules on social distancing and to isolate if they believe they have the virus.

In today's FMQs Ruth Davidson asked Nicola Sturgeon why the government was not “better prepared” for the the rise in demand for testing caused by the reopening of universities for the new term.

The First Minister responded that “discussions are ongoing” with the university sector about the “difficult situation” and further measures are set to be announced later.

She said this would include, “measures about prevention” as well as “making sure all of the guidance is being properly and rigorously implemented.”

Nicola Sturgeon also insisted that students who need to be tested are being tested, citing the large rise in positive cases in recent days as proof that the testing system is working.

She says the public - and the student population - can have confidence in the Test and Protect scheme.

The First Minister added that a walk-in centre will be opening in Edinburgh in the coming days.
