Coronavirus in Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon sets out what 'will not' be part of new restrictions

Nicola Sturgeon has set out what the Scottish Government are "not proposing" as they consider further restrictions.

Addressing soaring COVID-19 cases, the First Minister said levels of infection in Scotland are "higher than we are comfortable with".

She added that there is "very strong public health advice" to introduce further measure "over and above existing restrictions".

While the restrictions will not be announced until Wednesday in parliament, Ms Sturgeon said she will said what is not going to happen.

What are the Scottish Government NOT proposing?

It will not be another March lockdown

Nicola Sturgeon made it clear that a strict lockdown, similar to the one introduced in March, will not happen - even on a temporary basis.

You will not have to stay in your homes

The First Minister made it clear the public will not be required to stay in their homes - which was previously required during the nationwide lockdown, when people were allowed one burst of daily exercise outdoors.

Travel will not be banned

While the First Minister is still advising against non-essential travel, she made it clear that blanket restrictions on travel will not be imposed.

No 'total' shut down of economy

Unlike the lockdown March, there will not be a "total" shut down of the economy. However, the First Minister has not ruled out tighter restrictions on the hospitality industry.

Remobilisation of NHS to continue

Nicola Sturgeon said the remobilisation of the NHS following the pandemic will not be halted as services continue to resume for non-covid condtions.

Schools will not close

The First Minister said that, apart from October holidays, the Scottish Government are not proposing to close schools - either wholly or partially.

Nicola Sturgeon said: "I'll give a more detailed update of the current situation and set out any decisions about further measures that we have reached, and the reasons for them.

"But what I want to do now, given the entirely understandable public anxiety about what the next few weeks, is try to give you an insight into the Scottish Government's current thinking, and the issues that we are grappling with in coming to decisions."

When pressed about what measures they are considering, Nicola Sturgeon said it was "pretty obvious" that they need to "limit the ways the virus can spread" by limiting interaction betweens household.

She said that, with a ban on household meetings already in place, hospitality businesses are within the scope of settings that people are "more likely to come to together".
