Coronavirus in Scotland latest: New cases spikes by 208 in just a day - with 18 in the Lothians

In the past 24 hours, the number of new confirmed cases of coronavirus have soared by 208.

This includes 18 new confirmed cases in NHS Lothians health board area.

The latest Scottish Government total figure represents 2.3 per cent per cent of those who were newly tested.

245 people are currently in hospital with confirmed cases of the virus, while four people are in intensive care.

Despite the spike in cases over recent days, there have been no new deaths from confirmed cases of coronavirus.

The figure represents the highest daily total increase since 8 May.

It also comes amid the highest weekly increase in new cases in Scotland since May, with 1,079 testing positive in the past seven days.

The figure is more than double the 507 new cases in the week previous.

It comes as anti-lockdown protesters gathered in Edinburgh on Saturday to attend a rally organised by Saving Scotland.

The movement "there was no justification to lockdown the Healthy Majority" and urge Scots to say "no to mandatory vaccines and masks. No to secondary lockdowns."

Scotland's national clinical director, Prof Jason Leitch blasted the protesters as "deeply irresponsible".

He said: "I honestly do not understand it.

"I think it is irresponsible - do they think we're making it up? 194 countries are making up a viral pandemic.

"I would love to have not lived through the last six months, both in my job and what we have had to do to our country and many others.

"I think it is deeply irresponsible."
