Coronavirus in Scotland: Latest death recorded in North Lanarkshire as number reaches 2,500

The new death by COVID-19 announced by the First Minister at yesterday's briefing was recorded in North Lanarkshire, Public Health Scotland records have shown.

The death was recorded on September 14, two days after local restrictions were imposed on the Lanarkshire region.

The latest death brings the total since new lockdown restrictions were brought in to 4.

The total cumulative number of deaths in Scotland to 2,500.

Of the 267 cases recorded across Scotland yesterday, 101 were in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde area, and 59 were in Lanarkshire.

Speaking at yesterday's Scottish Government briefing, Nicola Sturgeon said: "The good news is the early indications suggest the restrictions in place in  Glasgow City, East and West Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire, might be helping to slow down the increase in new cases. That, at this stage, is positive.

"But the number of new cases is Greater  Glasgow  and Clyde still remains high and is still increasing - albeit, we think, at a slower rate than would've been the case without these restrictions in place.

"Of course, these same restrictions now also apply, as of last Friday, in North and South Lanarkshire. In all of these 7 local authority areas you should not host someone in your home unless it is for essential care purposes and you should not visit someone else in their home, again, unless it is for care purposes, or delivering shopping to a vulnerable elderly person. That is regardless of where they live."
