Coronavirus in Scotland: gyms and public swimming pools to potentially reopen on September 14

For those desperate to return to working out indoors, the end is in sight.

In today's coronavirus briefing Nicola Sturgeon has said that the indicative date they are currently giving for gyms and swimming pools reopening is 14 September 2020.

However, Nicola Sturgeon says gyms and swimming pools: "require a particularly cautious approach " so this date is very much potentially subject to change.

She will review this and move it to August if possible.

She said it was hoped that indoor sports courts could also open on the same date - good news for those missing indoor games of football, squash, badminton and more.

She said: "I absolutely understand and share the desire to see these facilities open as quickly as possible.

"However, the clinical advice I have is that because of the nature of these environments, they pose a particular risk and require a cautious approach.

"If it is judged reasonable to do so, we will seek to accelerate this to the end of August."

Nicola Sturgeon has also announced that she hopes sports stadia will be able to reopen from that day with limited numbers of spectators, some professional sports events may take place before then to test the safety mitigations.
