Coronavirus in Scotland: Glasgow pubs and restaurants to close tonight as Sturgeon echoes Prime Minister statement

Nicola Sturgeon has echoed the Prime Minister's announcement that pubs, cafes, restaurants and other businesses are to close from tonight amid the growing coronavirus crisis.

Earlier today, Boris Johnson also told nightclubs, theatres, gyms and leisure centres that they cannot open their doors tomorrow and must close as soon as is possible tonight.

They may continue to provide takeaway services but cannot allow customers to remain in the premises.

Speaking in a televised address from Bute House in Edinburgh, the First Minister reiterated the decision.

She added that the number of cases of COVID-19 are set to rise sharply.

Ms Sturgeon said everyone must act now to slow the spread of the virus, adding that we must also reduce the number of people we meet and come into contact with.

"There's no doubt difficult days do lie ahead but I close on a note of hope and belief," she said, adding that "with compassion and kindness and dedication and expertise of our NHS we can and will get through this".

The decision comes as it was confirmed today that the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Scotland has risen by 56 to 322.
