Coronavirus in Scotland: Death toll rises to 40

A total of 40 people in Scotland have sadly died due to coronavirus, the Scottish Government has announced.

The daily update, published at 2pm, revealed a further seven Scots have died in the past 24 hours, up from the figure of 33 deaths yesterday.

Meanwhile the number of confirmed cases in Scotland has shot up by 186, from 1,059 to 1,245, in 24 hours.

As it stands, there are 376 positive cases in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde region, a rise of 77 from yesterday's total of 299.

Scottish test numbers: 28 March 2020

A total of 13,133 Scottish tests have concluded. Of these:

  • 11,888  tests were confirmed negative
  • 1,245 tests were positive
  • 40 patients who tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) have died

The news comes after Scotland's Chief Medical Officer Dr Catherine Calderwood said yesterday afternoon that the number of people infected with the virus is estimated to be around 65,000.
