Coronavirus in Scotland: Christmas amnesty 'won't work' warns deputy chief medical officer

Scotland's deputy chief medical officer has raised concerns after the Bishop of Paisley suggested a Christmas day 'truce' on lockdown restrictions.

On Sunday, Bishop John Keenan, spoke out about the idea of a Christmas Day 'amnesty' similar to what was seen in the First World War.

His comments came in response to national clinical director Jason Leitch, who warned Scots to prepare for a "digital Christmas" this year.

The Bishop told the Sunday Times: "No one wants a digital Christmas" and said he hoped here would be a chance for "some kind of family Christmas".

But speaking to BBC's The Nine, Deputy CMO Dr Nicola Steedman suggested that a Christmas Covid ‘amnesty’ - won’t work, because "Covid hasn’t agreed to the amnesty."

She explained: "I've read about this and I've heard this referred to as an amnesty, if you like, a little bit like the previous amnesties we have seen on Christmas day in the World War.

"One thing i'd say about that is, the difficulty with this particular amnesty is that our opponent if you like, hasn't agreed to the amnesty - so this is not something that Covid has signed up to and said well yes I'll stop infecting people on Christmas Day.

"So we really want people to have as normal a Christmas as possible, believe me, we all do, we're all human beings ourselves, but as you say we have to balance that with any risk of transmission.

She added: "What we do now and how much we can get the virus levels down before Christmas is probably the best indicator of how normal a Christmas people are going to be able to have."
