Coronavirus in Scotland: children under five can now be tested for COVID-19

It has today been announced in Scotland's daily coronavirus briefing that children under the age of five can now be tested for COVID-19.

Dr Gregor Smith, the Chief Medical Officer for Scotland says that  children  can become infected with COVID-19, but they are unlikely to have symptoms.

However, as Scotland prepares to welcome children back to school in three weeks time it will be useful to know whether young children have COVID or not.

Early learning and childcare settings were recently able to reopen and younger children are now able to mix more without social distancing measures.

Now parents with children under the age of 5 who are showing symptoms of coronavirus are able to test their child for the virus by visiting the government's coronavirus testing website here.

As a result, families can rule out COVID and avoid the need to self-isolate - although people should of course self-isolate until the test results are back and shown to be negative.
